When to see a doctor for shoulder pain in Secunderabad

A clear guide to shoulder pain that can wait, and shoulder pain that should be examined.

· Written by Dr. Divya Bandari, Orthopedic Surgeon · Namalagundu, Secunderabad

Quick answer

See an orthopedic doctor if shoulder pain lasts more than one to two weeks, wakes you at night, or stops you lifting the arm. Pain after a fall, with numbness, or with a shoulder that looks out of place, needs same-day care.

What shoulder pain usually means

The shoulder is a shallow joint held by muscles and tendons. Pain on lifting, reaching back, or sleeping on one side is often from the rotator cuff, the biceps tendon, or stiffness in the joint capsule. Pain that starts in the neck and travels to the arm can feel the same and needs a different check.

Signs that should not wait

  • You cannot lift the arm after a fall or a sudden pull.
  • The shoulder looks flattened or sits in an odd position.
  • The hand is numb, cold, or weak.
  • Pain and fever occur together.
  • Pain has lasted more than two weeks despite rest.

What happens at an orthopedic visit

Dr. Divya Bandari asks which movements hurt, checks strength and range, and looks at the neck if the pain may be coming from there. An X-ray or ultrasound is used when the examination suggests a tendon or joint problem. The first plan is often physiotherapy and a change in how you lift, sleep, and work. Arthroscopy is discussed only when a tear or a mechanical problem is confirmed and non-surgical care has not helped.

Clinic hours at Namalagundu, Secunderabad are Monday to Friday, 7:00–9:00. Call +91 95025 12323 or 04027505152.

Questions patients ask

How long should I wait with shoulder pain?

A mild strain from a new activity can be watched for one to two weeks if you can still use the arm. Do not wait if the pain follows an injury or the arm feels weak.

Is night pain a reason to get the shoulder checked?

Yes. Shoulder pain that wakes you, or pain when you lie on that side, should be examined. It can come from the rotator cuff, the joint, or the neck.

Can shoulder pain be treated without surgery?

Many cases improve with activity changes, physiotherapy, and medicines chosen after an examination. Surgery is considered when a tendon tear or joint problem does not improve with that care.
